PASCAL Selected to Participate in AAC&U Institute on Open Educational Resources

Through the South Carolina Affordable Learning (SCALE) initiative, PASCAL librarians have developed a framework for promoting affordable learning, sharing information between members, and engaging with faculty. Over the next year, we’ll be expanding these efforts.

PASCAL has been selected to participate in the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) 2022-23 Institute on Open Educational Resources. The yearlong institute is designed is to “expand initiatives to develop free and affordable learning materials in teaching and learning contexts.”  The institute began with a two-day virtual kickoff event July 14-15 and will conclude with a capstone closing event in July 2023. Throughout the yearlong program, participants will engage with institute faculty, made up of some of the foremost movers and shakers in the open education community.
A team of PASCAL librarians and representatives from two partner agencies will be developing an ambitious and multifaceted initiative aimed at galvanizing the state’s higher education communities to support OER at statewide scale. The team includes:  Dr. Mariam Dittmann (SC Commission on Higher Education), Dr. Kimberly Walker (SC Technical College System), Katie Miller (Aiken Technical College), Yang Wu (Clemson University), and PASCAL staff members, Ellan Jenkinson and Rick Moul.  Mr. Moul is serving as the Team Lead.

Through the institute, the team has developed an action plan, in which it identified several overarching goals, including: increasing awareness of open and affordable resources, particularly with campus leadership; establishing statewide coordination and support for OER; and identifying sustainable funding sources to support affordable learning.

Within the twelve-month framework of the institute, the team has outlined activities following two concrete tracks:  an awareness campaign culminating in a state-level summit in the Spring of 2023 that will bring together stakeholders from across the state, and development of a strategic plan outlining a comprehensive program, governance, and supporting financial structure. Models we can draw on for inspiration include programs in Georgia, Virginia, Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Ohio, Massachusetts, and other states.

The team looks forward to working with members and partners across the state over the course of the project, including PASCAL’s Affordable Learning Committee, South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (SCICU), and others. In many ways, this approach follows the powerful model for creative collaboration that led to the foundation of PASCAL 21 years ago.
