An initiative of PASCAL, South Carolina Affordable Learning (SCALE) seeks to reduce the overall cost of higher education for students by promoting the use of quality low-cost and no-cost learning materials. In 2020, PASCAL piloted the SCALE Affordable Learning Grant Program, awarding $19,000 to eight member institutions in its first round. The purpose of the grant program is to expand the availability of no-cost course materials by providing funds to member institutions to support approaches they deem most effective for their individual situation.
Per the grant guidelines, PASCAL and the awardees will make all materials produced through the projects, including open textbooks, ancillary materials, and supplemental materials, available under a suitable Creative Commons license. Grant recipients will report on their projects at the June 2023 PASCAL General Membership Meeting.
