This spring, PASCAL is hosting a series of affordable learning webinars for librarians and faculty. The South Carolina Affordable Learning (SCALE) webinars are free and open to faculty and staff at PASCAL member institutions. Developed by PASCAL’s Affordable Learning Committee, the series will include sessions on the importance of accessibility in course materials, using the free, open-source H5P authoring tool to create open ancillary materials for courses, and an introduction to the Code of Best Practice in Fair Use for OER.

  • Accessibility Best Practices for Course Materials | Wednesday, March 9 | 3 - 4 pm
Whether you're using open educational resources or traditional textbooks in the classroom, it's important to ensure that all students can access and use those materials effectively. This webinar will help you learn more about accessibility - what it is, why it’s important, and how to ensure that different materials types are accessible.  Instructional Designers and Learning Experience Designers from USC Upstate and Northeastern Technical College will discuss accessibility and how you can use it to make course materials more available for all of your students.

  • Using H5P to Create OER Ancillary Course Materials | Tuesday, March 29 | Noon – 1pm
Would you like to develop creative, interactive online activities and homework to support teaching using Open Educational Resources? Explore H5P, a free, open-source software that allows you to create dozens of activities, from multiple choice questions, arithmetic quizzes, fill in the blank questions and more. Through this presentation you will learn how H5P can be used to replace expensive online homework from publishers in teaching, and be used to create engaging library tutorials as well. You will also learn about how H5P can be integrated into your Learning Management System and LibGuides.

  • Copyright Lessons for Reimagining Open Education with the Code of Best Practice in Fair Use for OER | Thursday, April 14 | 10:00 - 11:00am
University support for open education has never been higher, including at PASCAL. But open educators often have questions about copyright and especially about how they can include third party materials to make their OER more inviting, impactful, and representative of the students in their courses. This session introduces the Code of Best Practice in Fair Use for OER, a tool for educators, librarians, and authors to evaluate common professional scenarios in which fair use can enable them to create resilient materials that give educators the control and flexibility to meet the needs of their students and the pedagogical goals of their courses. Join us to learn about the Code, see examples of the Code in practice, and explore how they can incorporate the Code into their own work.

  • Inclusive or Exclusive? Reexamining "Inclusive Access" Textbook Programs | Thursday, April 21 | 1:00 - 2:00pm
In an effort to make course materials more affordable and accessible, many campuses are experimenting with “Inclusive Access” programs. Designed by the textbook industry, Inclusive Access is a sales model that adds the cost of digital course content into students’ tuition and fees—in other words, automatic textbook billing. While the advertised benefits of these programs have been widely promoted by vendors, there are also drawbacks for students and faculty that deserve equal attention. At a time where access to course materials is part of meeting students’ basic needs in higher education, what campuses are doing to reduce costs matters. Attend this Inclusive Access webinar to get the facts on what Inclusive Access programs mean for your campus, explore how they differ from open models like OER, and examine whether Inclusive Access is “inclusive” at all. Also learn how to access resources and more information from InclusiveAccess.org.

Registration is required. The webinars will be recorded and posted on the SCALE website for those who aren't able to attend the live session. View past webinars on the Recorded Webinars page on the SCALE website.

About PASCAL’s SCALE (South Carolina Affordable Learning) Initiative:

In 2017, PASCAL launched South Carolina Affordable Learning (SCALE), a statewide initiative that seeks to reduce the overall cost of higher education for students by promoting the use of quality low-cost and no-cost learning materials. SCALE programs include the Professors for Affordable Learning award, webinars and workshops for librarians and faculty throughout South Carolina, and the SCALE Affordable Learning Grant Program.
